with this “spiritual people can be violent” in mind, it would be worth pondering what Zoroaster has to say, and its a translation of a very ancient language-the Indo-European Avestan Gathic:

Righteousness is good,best it is, it is the illumination; illumination comes to him who is righteous
for the sake of the highest righteousness!

The interesting thing about that “pain” process is that even though it certainly would make you more aware, it still begins with you noticing that you are having the negative thought to begin with…you are so right that there are so much that we aren’t consciously aware of. I wonder if that process would condition us to be less aware so as not to create the pain??? Anyway, thanks for sharing…

What a well-written article, I agree whole-heartedly with what you say! There’s so much that we consciously aren’t aware of that we can’t possibly know what’s best all the time. I think there is wisdom in letting things happen.

There is a part in the book ‘The Pilgrimage’ by Paulo Coelho where he talks about the only way we can rescue our dreams is by being generous with ourselves. There’s a simple exercise in the book where the author is taught to dig his nail into the cuticle of his thumb until it hurts whenever a thought comes to mind that makes him feel bad about himself. “By transforming a spiritual pain into a physical one, we can learn what harm it can cause us.”

Now, how’s that for being violent?
