Our message from Michelangelo and his David

“Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it”                             Michelangelo

“I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free”. Michelangelo

These words by Michelangelo can serve as our reminder of why we are here. You are that block of stone, and also the sculptor.  Inside you is that incredible statue, that angel, Michelangelo’s David, and it’s your job to see it and carve away at all of those old thoughts and beliefs and limitations until you set yourself free.

First acknowledge the truth of who you are. You aren’t your job, your bank balance, your circumstances or this reality. You are an amazing extension of all that is. You are here to create the most amazing life that you can imagine. You hold the power to have, do or be anything of your choosing, but the first step is to know that truth, and then simply choose to see the angel inside.

“The marble not yet carved can hold the form of every thought the greatest artist has. “ Michelangelo

You are unlimited. You come from that “quantum soup” of endless possibilities. Just like the marble, you hold the form of every thought. As you choose, intend and visualize your desires, the angel is born.

“The more the marbles wastes, the more the statue grows.” Michelangelo

Once you “see the angel in the marble” the sculpting begins. It’s a moment by moment labor of love as you “chisel and chip away” at fear, worry, uncertainty and any feelings of unworthiness. These are simply the pieces of the marble that must fall away so that the angel can be revealed.  As you begin to get glimpses of the beauty inside, big chunks fall away easily and the excitement builds. You can’t wait to get back to work each morning to see how much beauty will be revealed that day. Your vision begins to gain more clarity and you begin to see the vision with color and intricate detail.

The world calls you away often, but you begin to realize that each moment is an opportunity to see your sculpture anew, and begin again with new vision and guidance that wasn’t there before. Each circumstance and experience that you gain seems to bring you to a new, higher place where you can see the entire angel, instead of working on one specific area.

You remove your attention from all of those chunks that are falling away, and just let them go. Your attention returns to the angel that is immerging and the knowledge that it’s your creation. You can’t get it wrong, and it’s perfect.

You are perfect!

Brilliant! What an amazing metaphor and your insight into this is life-changing…as we chisel away to sculpt ourselves. Thank you Deb, for you.

Love your post! What stands out to me is seeing the emerging figures out of marble…haven’t viewed these in ages and these are a wonderful metaphor to inspire you in your journey. As the figure depicts David from the great Biblical story of David and Goliath, there is also that for further inspiration.

  5. Debbie says:

Thanks Renee! The analogy touched me as well as I realized that we are all that emerging masterpiece!
